Gastric Sleeve Candidacy
During your initial consultation, our TLC weight loss surgeons will talk with you about your ultimate goals and help you determine if you are a candidate for gastric sleeve surgery. At Texas Laparoscopic Consultants, the criteria for eligible weight loss surgery candidates are in line with those set by the National Institutes of Health. Candidacy requirements for bariatric surgery include:
- A Body Mass Index of 40 or more.
- A Body Mass Index higher than 35 with the presence of comorbid conditions.
- A BMI of 30 or more with type 2 diabetes that is difficult to control with medical treatments and lifestyle changes.
- A willingness to exercise and make other permanent changes to your lifestyle.
- Must be willing to complete the treatment and all long-term follow-up required.
- No presence of untreated significant psychiatric illnesses.
- Complete understanding of the process of the surgical procedure, the potential complications that can occur, and the changes associated with the procedure.

- Acceptance that, if you are a smoker, you must stop smoking at least for one month before and one month after the procedure
Proof that attempts at non-surgical weight loss options have occurred and failed. - Acceptably low risks both medically and operatively.
